password key word filter/filetype filter
« on: September 28, 2007, 09:10:30 AM »

my daughter would like to use aMule to find music but I cannot let her do this on her own due to the many adult subject materials that can be included in a search result. If  I  could set a password that would allow only Mp3's this would greatly reduce the risk of her being exposed to innapprpriate material.

What is your fear exactly? That she might stumble upon it accidentally (faked, manipulated search results from bogus servers), or that she might directly seek it out because she's curious?

If it's the second, it would be much better to talk to her about these things instead of trying to censor her. You see, there's nothing inappropriate about sex. Sure, a lot of today's porn is over the top, but again, talk to her about what porn is, why it's there and how in many cases it doesn't accurately represent what sex is about.

But if she's too young for such a talk, then you simply don't let her at the computer without supervision. You won't be able to censor everything anyway, even if you put in a word filter or something. And porn is not limited to aMule, she's bound to find it somewhere if she's at the computer unsupervised. Plus, it's not like a naked body will permanently damage her or something.

That said, limiting to specific type (say, mp3s) will help, so you do have a valid feature request, but it definitely wont cure your problem.

Hi Peterregister,

explain your daughter that she will have a higher success rate in finding her songs when she uses the music file type while searching. And explain here how fake files work. (Sometimes people take a file - mostly porn -  and rename it to something popular. She can check this by right-clicking on the file in transfer view and selecting file details. If there are many different names for the file pointing to different contents, then it is most probably fake. Checking the filesize is recommendable as well, e.g. mp3-files should be between 2 and 10MB in size.)

About your actual request: I don't think this will be included into aMule. It would be easy to integrate into aMule, but when you have access to the local computer it is even easier to circumvent it.

I only made a request as the Forum subject matter states. I did not ask for a moral lecture. Children are ready to know more as they mature and this is different for every child. Some people never mature and never  realize the truth and live in a perpetual state of denial. Pornography is the result of immature people's fear of sex. A hungry market for sex material has immerged as a result of censorship and unnaturally repressive views about sex.

What is the oldest profession in the world?.............

Prostitution?.....Nope, the priest. Without the priest, prostitution would never exist!

I don't know if you meant me as well, but if yes, than I ask you to pardon me. I didn't intend to lecture you, I was merely trying to show you a way to reduce the risk of unwanted files to near zero.

Mh, thinking about it I guess that shamans were really the first people not dealing with things important to survive like hunting or picking fruits.

If  I  could set a password that would allow only Mp3's this would greatly reduce the risk of her being exposed to inappropriate material.

What you're asking for, is black list of keywords for search, which can be unlocked with password. Although feature request can be seen as a valid one, it definitely will not be implemented. Here's why.
* This will not work "as planned". You can do search by other means (heard about google?) and then pass link to aMule for download. She even can install her own copy of aMule, run search there and then pass links around.
* Bad moral value. You asked not to lecture you, but _I_ see such features are used by people to make appearance of "protecting the children", while real problem (lack of parental attention) still exists.

Wrong. Market for sex exists because people, well, like sex. In different forms and ways.

Nope. It would be hunter or politician (tribe leader). Which have nothing to do with this discussion anyway.

Wrong. All people mature, but each of us have it's own truth.

I find funny that someone that doens't ask for a moral lecture starts making religious and political claims.

This is a p2p forum, and this is the "Feature request" section. This is not for political commentary, sex talk, or religious views.  I could have a lot to say in the subject, but I won't, for that very same reason.

This is going way offtopic. Another offtopic post, and I'm afraid I'll have to close the thread. Besides that, I think lfroen already replied to the original poster's question: this feature will not be implemented.

Regards.

Thanks for considering the feature, alas it has been misunderstood and has opened irrelevant accusations and prejudices.
By the way: "The oldest profession..." is a joke....which is not meant to be taken seriously...of course  that depends on where you live. Here people laugh at it, buit I also lived in countries where they would behead me for such a joke. The road to hell is paved with good intentions...

(The priest has created guilt and shame around sex which is why something beautiful and free is NOT enjoyed by many out of  fear of being punished with shame and Hell later if shame doesn't do the trick) So as histories around the world show that  these repressive ideas about sex have created an unnatural hunger for what is now a mass market opportunity exploited by those in the sex industry.)

In some countries children are taken away from the parents if the children are exposed to what some authoritarians call indescent material even if accidentally, so the requested feature is important to some.

Case closed.
