well connected but not up-downloading
« on: September 25, 2008, 06:17:57 PM »

I did not know we had a help desk like this!
thanks for making the service available!
let's see if anybody has a clue what my computer has...
I installed the 2.1.3 version a couple of years ago and it worked very well since then.
Now, the connection is established and everything is running but there is no up nor dowloading.
So, the system is blocked and useless.
I do not have any idea what's going on...
can anybody help?
thanks in advance

      little crappy guide by me :) ;

1. read, investigate, install

complete guides and general info on all sorts of amule based stuff is available on the user run aMule wiki PLEASE READ ALL YOU CAN BEFORE POSTING A PROBLEM WITH SPEED
compile/install latest aMule version (2.2.2)

2. upload
As a rule it is important that on ADSL neither the uplink nor the downlink be used at 100% capacity. Usually 90-95% is a good idea (taking into account overheads too.
if your not up to testing your own connection using 75%-90% of your 'real' upload capacity will be fine
test at http://speedtest.net/ for example:

367 kb/s / 8 * 0.75 = 34 kB/s rounded down to 30 kB/s

upload 30 kB/s (make sure the upload in the stats tab is a straight line)
slot allocation 3 or 5 kB/s works good

IMO a stable slower upload is better then hitting your limit all the time.

3. connections
some routers don't like udp packets, if your getting firewalled or disconnected try disabling KAD/ udp all together.
But TBH if this is happening your router is cheap and nasty get a good one.

either way I urge all people to try and connect to both KAD and ed2K with HIGHID to ensure network richness.

safe connection options for virtually everyone are;

max connections: 200
max new connecitons in 5 secs: 10
and no more then 3000 sources at one time.

most router max connections before overloading are 256 so 200 is safe.

3.1 max sources
basic formula on how max sources are worked out;

Number of useful sources is calculated directly from rate value. Max Connections is not relevant.

Reask is every 30 mins = 1800 secs (30x60)

Max 10 per 5 sec = 2 per sec (10/5)

Therefore max sources = 1800 x 2 = 3600

then to avoid hitting the limit and wasting sources we leave a margin of error and round down to 3000 sources (maximum)
keep checking your stats to see if your hitting this limit, if so, i would stop a couple of downloads (if your having trouble that is)

Remember that the rate value is determined from your Max Connections limit where it should be set to avoid reaching. This is an inexact science but experience shows 200/10. 400/20, 500/25 etc. work well.

below are settings that can be used and the limit of 'useful sources', check that you never go above this limit if so, stop downloads until it goes below.
these are rounded down;

100/5 = 1000
200/10 = 3000
400/20 = 6000
500/25 = 8000

4. ports
ISP can limit mass data exchange on lower ports (default amule ports can be completely blocked), use high ports (above 4000)  i.e. 54662, 54672 and then forward them, and allow through your hardware/software firewall

5. server list / IPfilter
First inspect the server options info here

I would recommend settings;
  • 'remove dead server after' 10
  • unticking all 'update' options (I prefer manually updating, to ensure security)
  • I also like to use the 'priority system' this helps you pick priority over which servers to connect to and it which order i.e. High first then Normal ect.
all other options are up-to you, its common sense really.

5.1 obtaining
http://edk.peerates.net/servers.php?lang=0, peerates tests each new server for spam and collects lots of useful information, read carefully to decide which servers from peerates list you want to connect to (the above list is clean , but one are two servers only index free content but are not classed as fake servers, so read all info, i personally delete the 'peerates.net' test server)
  • connect to a server, eDonkey Server No1/2 have the best scores atm
5.2 updating
Only ever update your serverlist if/when Bluetack updates there IPfilter (usually once every one/two weeks)
Check for updates at http://bluetack.co.uk/bims/filters/
then, when there's an update:

  • disconnect
  • update IPfilter
  • update serverlist
  • do an inspection (5.1)
  • connect to a server

I don't find this guide crappy, I find it good enough to sticky it.

i think this thread should be renamed, people are missing it.

maybe something really obvious.. like 'aMule not running how you think it should?'

although what ever sounds good to the mod/admin

Hi gav616,

Please create a new topic with a more appropriate name for your guide and inform me (or another moderator) about it. We'll unsticky this thread and sticky the new topic.

Thank you. :) Writing such help is much appreciated.
