please update wiki page - hard to find infos
« on: October 17, 2008, 11:30:17 AM »

First of all: thanks to all involved! I imagine it's a big workload to keep all this running.
So please don't get me wrong, I really appreciate the work you're doing... so it's just a suggestion:

I've started only recently and I'm having hard times finding infos. Initially I've read everything I could find on the wiki, but quite a few things still seemed obscure. Searching through the forum though, I've discovered that there seems to be much more info available on the wiki, besidesthe one  that is listed and linked on the main page. (or is it just me, unable to find it?)

To give an example: I've found a splendid walk-through guide for setting the user-preferences in amule by sheer luck. It's
http://www.amule.org/wiki/index.php/Usage_Preferences#Server
and it was hidden in one of the postings in the forum as a link from some kind helper. I don't know wether there are more guides like this on wiki? If so, where are they? If this is the only one, it would still be very useful to put a link an the main page: http://www.amule.org/wiki/index.php/Main_Page.

From my understanding it should be under "usage" but I couldn't find it there, nor in any other place...
Does anybody have all the links to every piece that could be part of a "user guide". I'm not a techi but if it's just about compiling it and indexing it, I'd be happy to help.  :)

Well, it is right on the Main page: Usage/Help using aMule and there under Preferences. Try to work your way from this page, it should give you a good start.  :)
There is also a search function in the Wiki.

Hello Lilly,

Do you have any suggestions on how to improve the experience for new users who search for help in the wiki? We would appreciate it a lot if you could give us some hints, because we would like to avoid the problems you had.

kind regards

hello sturedman, hey wuischke,

reading your posts I've looked at the wiki page... again... (after so many time trying to find help there...)

and finally it sunk in how you guys structured it... ok... this might be really dumb on my part:
There's USAGE with all the different topics
and behind those topics there are links for the different languages/translations

I thought it's just avalable in those langages...in fact I never clicked on the link of the topic but tried to work my way through the translated instructions  :-[
(it never occured to me... ok this IS really stupid)
wondering why the hack the most basic thing like "using amule" is available only in French... I feel like a true idiot now

But honestly, I thought... ok... maybe it's very heavy on French...maybe many of the developpers are French or I don't now why?!? but hey it's a free app with people working on it in their spare time, so I've got to content myself to whatever is there... (but it's tough in French since it's computer stuff...)

the search function unfortunately didn't pull the infos for me... I've mostly always  received:

There is no page titled ":preference". You can create this page.
For more information about searching AMule Project FAQ, see $1.
Showing below 19 results starting with #1.
(still trying to figure out what the "for more information...., see $1."-part means)

because ie "preference" doesn't give me the link straight to  http://www.amule.org/wiki/index.php/Usage_Preferences but instead to a myriad of  stuff like "FAQ eD2k-Kademlia", "Changelog 2.0.0-rc1" etc. I've clicked my way through some of it, received valuable info about other things I wasn't searching and then combed my way through the forum's postings... since the topis above and similar ones are really a bit overwhelming when you start out on amule and are not a techie.

so it's maybe just a question of the main "FAQ" page and what it looks like, and /or it's links look like?? I'm heading off for a trip till Nov., but if I don't offend anybody with this suggestion, I could just give it a try (I mean just to restructure the layout of the page) once I'm back?

--  or maybe it really is just me who couldn't see what's obvious for everybody else?? how embarrassing...

Many things are obvious for us, who wrote those pages and the app itself, and we can't really imagine how and what a total newbie would look for. That's why it's good to have you around, Lilly, and we appreciate all your suggestions.

I'm glad you shared your experience with us. As GonoszTopi already pointed out, it's very hard for us to find usage problems.

We are working on a Wiki reorganization and will address the language issue by providing overview pages for each language.

I'm glad we have so many motivated French speaking users, who help translating the wiki. There are, however, currently no French developers.

The $1 - display was a good catch, I've made a change and this will be fixed very soon. Thank you!

We would appreciate your feedback on the link organization. Have a good trip, we're looking forward to hearing from you!

The Overview is already there, it's called mainpage. The problem is, that many sites don't have links to their translations (the usage tree is the worst in this case). I wanted to add these things after I addressed the translationslink translations issue, which is ~90% done.
