Disable ed2k support by default.
« on: January 25, 2009, 05:34:27 PM »

First of all, I am not talking about eliminating ed2k support. I am curious if it is a bad idea to use only Kad network by default.

I say this that there are fewer and fewer servers ed2k (and safe servers, much less) and the new people do not understand why you can not connect to them or why they often fail.

It would be interesting to add information to the download window of server.met file about the option to use another network more secure/stable. Since many users do not know of the existence of the Kad network even when they are using.

I think it's a good idea.

Really? An ED2K client which disables ED2K by default? Will you also provide (an URL to) list of KAD bootstrap nodes? No? So, how new user is supposed to start using application? Don't answer "find in google" because it sounds like "in your face".

aMule is an eMule-like client for the eD2k and Kademlia networks, supporting multiple platforms.

aMule is not only a ED2K client. And I am not talking about eliminating ed2k support, only disable by default. Then only user who want use ed2k network will enable that net.

I am not an expert in the world of programming, but I think that when a function begins to decline is promoted which will be his successor, no?

Well, since Lugdunummaster himself suggested on the eMule board that ED2K is as good as dead, it's not as silly as it may sound. And, even with ED2K search disabled, transfer is still 100% ED2K, so it's still an ED2K client.  :)

I don't think the download of a nodes.dat should be any more problem than the download of a server.met which is required to get started as well. And you don't have the fake servers problem on Kad.

Well, maybe let's first have enable/disable in the preferences fully working. I mean do not load server.met on startup (if ed2k disabled), no need to restart if you enable ed2k, and so on.

Both networks will be enabled by default, as long as both networks work.
