Failure to connect to ED2K
« on: June 22, 2009, 08:18:45 PM »

After not using my computer for a while I have returned to it and aMule 2.2.3 with Mac OS 10.4.11 on a G5 PPC iMac. The application boots quickly and immediately connects to the Kad network (with a green arrow), but fails completely to connect to the ED2K network. Now ED2K info shows status of "not connected".

I have not changed any firewall or port-forwarding settings. Before, it used to connect instantly to the ED2K network givng me a high ID with a green arrow every time.

In ' Connection Preferences' ED2k IS checked/ticked.

Any suggestions to fix this would be welcome thank you.

HI I have tried to download 2.2.5 from both servers in Berlin, but get error messages from both of them saying they cannot be contacted because the servers are not responding.

Try with other ed2k servers, change your server.met file

Now we obtain an up-to-date IPfilter to filter out all the bad/fake servers/clients

IMO 'Bluetacks' IPfilter is the best and most up-to-date

Go HERE and download the 'Normal' list, named 'nipfilter.zip',

extract to your home directory DO NOT EXTRACT DIRECTLY TO YOUR AMULE FOLDER

you should now have a file named 'nipfilter.dat', rename to 'ipfilter.dat'

Is nipfilter.dat.gz the same as nipfilter.zip or nipfilter.dat?

Here is a sample of entries from the Network log:

Is nipfilter.dat.gz the same as nipfilter.zip or nipfilter.dat?
Not exactly. "nipfilter.dat.gz" is most likely the gzip compressed nipfilter.dat.

Your network log tells us, that the servers are not reachable. Most likely they are down.
How long have you "not been using aMule"?

Please add the following server manually an try to connect to it:
Name: eDonkeyServer No2
IP: 212.63.206.35
Port: 4242

Thanks.

I updated my server using  http://peerates.net/servers.php by adding this manually and immediately got a  high ID on the ED2K network although I'm not sure why. I then quit aMule and restarted it. At first it didn't connect, but after about a minute it did, and gave me a high ID again. Weird

Nonetheless I am trying follow instructions to put a file called ipfilter.dat into /home/USERNAME/aMule folder. My question though is which aMule folder and where is it. Not the folder in Applications right? I thought to follow this procedure to try and improve the security and quality of the server list, but am too ignorant to get past this early step.

Please, have a look at these two wiki articles:
1.) http://www.amule.org/wiki/index.php/IPFilter
2.) http://www.amule.org/wiki/index.php/Ipfilter.dat

The files goes into the ".aMule" folder of your home directory.
When you copy the file into it while aMule is running, you will have to reload it through the preferences (security) dialog.

It's not "aMule", but ".aMule" (->.<-aMule). The dot makes it a hidden folder, please activate showing hidden files/folders.

The path is ~/.aMule or $HOME/.aMule

Sorry, I didn't read properly, you're on Mac OS X...

On Mac OS X it's ~/Library/Application Support/aMule, where ~ is /Users/username.

Please excuse this wrong information.

Now, I've found the folder immediately and replaced the old ipfilter.dat with the new one without any problem. Thanks.

I copied and pasted http://peerates.net/servers.php into the box entitled 'Add server manually: Name'. After doing this, a list of 11 servers appears in the upper ED2K window. Although most of them have Server names such as 'Master Server xx' or 'StormShare X', where 'x' is a single or double digit number, in the description column to the right, these servers are all called 'www.StormSex.net'

Are those just harmless server name descriptions or does this mean I am connecting to servers whose main folder and file servings are porn? If so, I'm not interested in them and would like to know how to delete them. If on the other hand they are just names, which don't have any relation to the folders and files served through them, I don't care and will leave them.

Further on in the helpful instructions for getting a clean server list, there is discussion of something called Peerates Analysis Centre. I followed instructions for disconnecting aMule, deleting all the servers in the server window, reconnecting and deleting 'peerates.net' test servers. The 'StormSex' servers still appear. I don't mind this, and am not moralistic about it. It is just that if I am not interested in most of the files and folders they serve, are they worth having on my server list?
