The UPnP TCP Port setting in the aMule
« on: December 24, 2009, 07:38:37 AM »

hello everybody.
i am using the snow leopard server.
There is a UPnP TCP Port setting in the aMule. what is that for?
according to some websites, i need to turn on the 1900 UDP and 5000 TCP.
but i can see the difference between the 5000 TCP port on and off. must i turn this on on the firewall?

and in the aMule preference, there is a default setting for UPnP specifying UPnP TCP Port 50,000. is this TCP port the same concept as 5,000 above? if so, should i set the 50,000 to 5,000 in the aMule? should i open the 5,000 port on the firewall?

thank you in advanced.

In aMule's preferences (under "Connections") you can configure 3 (implicitly 4) ports. The standard client TCP port, extended client UDP port and the uPnP TCP port. To use aMule to its full potential you have to enable the standard client TCP port in your firewall/router, both incoming and outgoing. You should also enable the extended client UDP port in your firewall/router, again both incoming and outgoing. A third port you need to enable is an UDP port, which is the standard client TCP port + 3 (if your standard client TCP port is 5000, you need to enable UDP 5003) again both incoming and outgoing.

UPnP (Universal Plug and Play) can be used when you have a router. If your router supports UPnP and it's enabled aMule will use uPnP to forward the correct ports in your router. If you don't have a router (or one that doesn't support UPnP) or have forwarded the correct ports manually, you can disable UPnP in aMule's preferences.

For more information see aMule's wiki and Wikipedia.

thank you for your reply.

i just don't know how to set the last UPnP TCP port and what is that port used to do. there is no such setting in another version eMule. and it is not mentioned a lot in documents.

As he said already, and the wikipedia article should clarify, too: If you use UPnP, aMule can tell your router which ports he needs forwarded. If you have everything set up correctly (you have highid) or your router doesn't support it, you can disable UPnP completely. Check your router manual and config to see if it supports it, and which port is needed.

thank you.
and sorry for my vague  question.
i need the UPnP because i am using router, and my router supports the UPnP. i am not using the port forwarding.
things should have been very straight forward.
but recently, i want to turn the firewall on, which is part of the Mac OS X Server.
so the traffics need to go through the router and the system firewall.
not until i turned on the UDP 1900 on the system firewall, did the UPnP work.
i found some information, which said UPnP is working on 1900 and 5000. but why aMule has default configuration for 50,000 while another version eMule have no such setting.
