More robust UI for tracking downloads and uploads
« on: April 04, 2011, 10:10:57 PM »

Well, instead of describing the new killing UI, I simply say -- UI present in 2.2.6 (for example).

On the same page user could track downloads and uploads, it was robust because it didn't require constant page switching.

It could be combined with current UI (downloads page)
* upper pane -- double clicking could unfold sources as before -- it is no harm
* bottom pane -- aMule 2.2.6 in that pane was able to show "uploads" in 3 modes, 2.3.1 show here sources -- so combining them together means 4 modes: 3 as in 2.2.6, and the 4th as in 2.3.1 -- again, no harm done, user could switch the mode she/he likes best

Shared files page -- no complains here, I don't use bottom pane, but -- no harm done.

Thank you in advance for considering the changes in UI.

When you have little more time, would you mind explain the reasons? Because I asked for more robust UI, and no (w/o reasons) simply means aMule is now designed to be not robust.

Robust means to you, don't do anything instead of watching? Don't you use different apps aswell?
Robust mean to us, it doesn't crash.

If you use other apps, you have to switch anyway to see something else, and you can change to the tabs you need, so just do it. If you prefer ui's without tabs, imagine how amule would look with everything on one page.

Sure, but this is aMule site. It is hard to report a bug here, for lets say, KMail, right?

Robust _UI_ (see the title).

a) I asked for panes with switches -- so user could switch to the info she/he finds more useful. More exactly -- the 4th mode for bottom pane on downloads page.

b) I have no idea where did you get this "amule without tabs"

c) I can imagine upload and downloads on the same page -- it was amule 2.2.6, and it worked great in terms of UI

_IF_. But when I work with amule, I work with amule. So when I switch _to_ amule I would like to have a break of switching back and forth, and focus on the transfers.

Wrong Context, read further.

Robust UI means to us, the ui doesn't crash (better?)

> b) I have no idea where did you get this "amule without tabs"

If you get what you want, others maybe want stats, and at the end everything has to be on one page.

> when I work with amule, I work with amule

So you are sitting there and watching some numbers changing for hours? Maybe intetupted by the screensaver? I can't imagine a case where up and download has to be monitored continuously, but if you have one, why not just write a little app for amulecmd or directly ec which gives you all infos in a way you need it.

And to end this: No

Sometimes design changes are made which may take a little time to get used to. Which you didn't give it obviously.
We decided to change the UI, it's been this way for a while, and now we roll it.
And when an RC is out it's too late to toss over the UI anyway.

Thank you for reply.

Switching = time. It is not a matter of getting used to, it is a matter of entity I don't have.

UI cannot crash, it is not a code, it is a design/idea.

And this leads us to...? Composable UI -- nothing new, useful, productive, more code involved, I admit, but flexible and works for everyone.

Why for hours? For few minutes.

The new UI is the new UI. It's here to stay. Maybe some day someone will make a flexible, dockable UI for people to reconfigure to whatever they feel like. For now, no such thing is available, nor do we have the intention to make it available any time soon.
