I have EXACTLY the same problem!!

Amule has never, ever downloaded at any rate faster than 6kb/s, which is poor considering I have a half-a-meg a second connection. Nicotine / Apollon have both been known to run at speeds up to 77kb/s for me! But aMule averages at 0.8kb/s, even on files which show 200 sources, and will often be "waiting" for a file for over 24 hours... and people are uploading from me at 15kb/s ALL the time.

Also, when running aMule, web browsing is so slow - I've never actually been timed out, but have come pretty close. Mind you, Nicotine does this too on my system.

I am even more of a newbie, and really don't understand complicated shell scripts etc. I use Mandrake 10 and I installed aMule through Rpmdrake, their imitation debian thing. Could this be why it's not performing properly?

I have good ID at least -- I've been uploading to people at a solid 15 kb/s for about 5 days of uptime now. In that time, aMule has been on all the time, and I've managed to download a total of 300mb. Oh yeah, I'm using aMule 1.2.6, by the way.

PLEASE HELP!!!! I'm sure there are lots more with this problem.......

I finally found what made aMule run sooo slow. In the Incoming directory i had a 3.5 gigabyte file: i removed it, and everything runs fine now.  ?(

zerozerosette: there have always been problems handling 2GB files.. should be op in rc3 and rc2, but well, it seems it's still failing in some cases ;-) Will be added in rc4 buglist if it's not fixed by then, don't worry.

Snowman: Well, it's just a matter of having aMule running for osme days, not just five. Read the FAQ on how ed2k network works to understand why running aMule (or any other ced2k client9 for the first few days results in very slow speed, and after some weeks, speed is like hell: you'll want to stop aMule so you get some bandwith to web brose ;-)

I read the FAQ - it didn't tell me much, only that you need high ID and a generous upload rate to get good download speeds. Well, I have high ID, and I've set the upload rate to 15, so I don't know....what exactly is it that makes aMule speed up over a few days?

BUT my downloads have started to speed up, so I believe you! One was going at 22kbs earlier, so there is hope.........

Which says more or less what I already explained you.
Obviously, there's no trick to speed u your client. That would be cheating (or "leeching")and would be bring the ed2k network to it's death. And we don't want that, right?
So the ED2K network is designed to be a solid network with no ways to brake it's solidness.
The only way to get a nice download is to share, share and share ;-)

I tested my connection speed (at http://www.numion.com/YourSpeed) and when aMule isn't running, my browsing speed clocks at 325kb/s. When aMule is on,  it is 19kb/s.  Should the jump be that extreme? I can't help feeling I must have something set up wrong.... :(

Yeah, sorry -- kbps.

I just tried measuring my speed again, with aMule running  (uploading flat-out at 15kB/s as it is 24/7, but not downloading anything), and it was measured at 14kbps.

I don't know....how would I find out?

EDIT: Been hunting through my ISP's homepage. They say my downstream bandwidth is 768k, and the upstream bandwidth is 128k. I don't know if that's what you were referring to? Other than that, their site is pretty hard to navigate.

set you up limit on amule to 10 and slot alloc to 2 ..

If you set upload limit of aMule higher then actual capability of the line, you will get very big lags in browsing. Those delays are caused by huge queue that is created on you cable modem (or adsl modem). Since all packet must travel this queue, tcp acks are delayed which in turn futher decrease browsing (and download !) speed.
To deal with those the best is use QoS and prioritize packets on your system (both linux and windoze can do that)
