How to get HighID? --I did read the docs...
« on: November 07, 2004, 08:12:35 PM »

Hi all,

I am running rc7 from Debian Sid and I have a perpetual lowid.  It doesn't matter which server I connect to, I get a lowid.  Here's my network setup:

ADSL Line --> Router (running NAT, no firewall) --> IPCop 1.3 router (also running NAT, firewalled) --> switch --> multiple PCs.

Fairly standard setup, really.  I have opened up all the ports listed on the FAQ_eD2k-Kademlia wiki page (4662 TCP, 4672 UDP, 4661 TCP, 4665 UDP, 4711 TCP, 4712 TCP) through the "external service access" page on IPCop.

The only thing I can think of as to why I'm getting a permanent lowid is that any incoming connection will not actually know which PC on the LAN it's supposed to be connecting to due to (even one level of) NAT.  However, I am reluctant to enable port forwarding of those ports to my specific PC since other members of my household also run aMule.

Any thoughts on how I/we can get highids?

Many thanks.

Grant.

Without port forwarding you won't get HighID, afaik.

You can set your aMule to use some non-default ports (eg. TCP 4663 instead of 4662, etc), so it won't have any effect on the other aMules. You just have to open&forward those ports your aMule is set to.

(It works for me, so it should work for you aswell...)

If I do that, how would I receive incoming connections?  Do the ports I have chosen to use get passed to the server when I connect?

Ok, I've just spoken to my housemates and they're happy for the default ports to be forwarded to my machine... so I've done that and I'm still getting lowids.

It wouldn't have anything to do with there being 2 routers and therefore 2 levels of NAT?  I wouldn't have thought it would since the primary router (which, for all intents and purposes is being used solely as a modem) forwards all ports to the secondary (IPCop) router.

I'm a little stumped... give me a Cisco router any day!
