Location of downloaded files & files I wish to share
« on: February 05, 2005, 08:31:40 PM »

Hi all, and apologies if this has been covered elsewhere.  I'm new to p2p and have only been using a mac for six months so please forgive my ignorance (it's not wilful I promise!). A few questions:

1. It took me a while to figure out that the destination folder for downloads was hidden.  Can I change this folder to a location of my choice without screwing anything up?

2. I was a little confused by the location of files I wish to share.  By this I mean that the 'Shared Directories' option seemd to be suggesting that all folders on my computer were open to the outside world.  Is this the case?

3. Can someone please explain to me the best way to set up and locate folders for downloads and for sharing.  I am concerned that I have not put my shared folders in the correct place, as it appears nothing is uploading.

Thanks, and I hope someone can help.

Hi and welcome.  We are happy to forgive ignorance, especially since we ourselves are afflicted with it so often.  ;)

Yes.  In aMule preferences, Directories, Incoming Directory.  Set it to anything you like.  Be aware that the contents of the Incoming directory are automatically shared.

No, you've misunderstood.  That control allows you to browse all the folders on your computer.  If you want to select one to share, double-click it.  It will turn bold to indicate it is being shared.  The icons of all of the containing folders will change color to indicate that one of their children is being shared.  When you share a folder, only its immediate contents will be shared.  aMule will not automatically share the contents of folders inside that folder.  If you wish to share a folder and all its subfolders (and their subfolders, ...), then control-click (AKA right-click) on its icon.  This is just a shortcut for you drilling down and double-clicking each subfolder manually.

There is no "best" way.  It depends on your individual needs and intentions.  I suspect the answers to your questions above will give you the information you need to achieve what you want.  If you still have questions, tell us what you're trying to achieve and why your current setup isn't satisfactory, and we can give more advice.

Good luck.

As a good start for someone new to amule / ed2k:
Don't just share some folders with files you got from somewhere else / ripped yourself. If you do so and nobody else has the exact same files (as in "bit for bit the same") you will be the only available source for them and it won't be a happy downloading experience for somebody who wants these files.

Instead don't share files at the beginning, just start some downloads. After you got a complete chunk without errors (9,28 MB) amule will automatically start to share this chunk, making it available to anybody else. And after you completed a file in amule you can (should) keep it in your share as long as possible (especially rare files with not many sources) so the file wont become a corpse (at least thats how we in Germany call files for which no complete sources exist  :) ).

Thanks folks, that was exactly what I needed.  I do have one more question though:

I've figured out how to pause my downloads when I need more bandwidth for checking mail, playing COD etc, but I've noticed that the uploads do not pause as well, nor can I find a way to pause them manually.  This has the effect of eating loads of bandwidth and slowing other web access to a crawl.

Any tips?

Thanks once again.

check that
max-conn / 5secs
is not to hihg, if it is over 20maybe lower it

also limit you upload bandwith, if you have 14kB upload set upload to 10, at least something lower then your max upload

that should help

Okay, thanks.  Tried that, but unable to see if it works because my ISP went tits up and I had to reset the router to get a connection.  The IP table are still all the same, i.e. the TCP/UDP ports I built rules for are still in place, but I now get 'Low ID' messages from any server I try and connect to.

So, everything is the same as it was before.  Any ideas why this may have changed?

Thanks.

I apologise for my awful (and confusing) gramar.  What I meant to say was:

All settings are as they were prior to reseting my router, i.e. as they were when the client was showing me a 'High ID' and I could see and connect to any server I wanted.  Despite this, I am now stuck with a 'low ID' and have been unsuccessful in resolving the situation.

I've had a read through several other forums and Wiki's - eMule (where there was a great thread on IP tables for my USR router),  mlMac and other p2p client/network resources - and I am unable to figure out the solution.  If anyone has any ideas, tips or links to information resources that may help, I would be greatful.

Thanks, and I promise I'll go away soon ;-)

As stefanero suggested, if aMule is using so much bandwidth that other normal internet access is painfully slow, you should reduce your upload/download limits and max. connections per 5 seconds.  However, if you need your full bandwidth for something else and were going to try to pause both uploads and downloads, you might as well just quit aMule during that time.

As far as getting stuck with lowid after resetting your router, I'm not sure.  Did you get assigned a different private IP address?  If you haven't set up your router to assign a specific private IP based on your computer's MAC address, then you may get a random one, especially if there's more than one computer asking the router for addresses.

Yes, I did get assigned a new private IP address by the router, but I added new rules to allow for this.

What I was unable to do however, was to remove one of the old rules for the previous private IP address - it let me delete the TCP rule, but not the UDP one.

Might this be causing the problem?

if a rule is in your router which is basically going noone it does not hurt.
but of course it does not "look" nice ;) and maybe you might need the udp port later, so it would be wize to get it out from the rules table.
a look at the manual should help ;)

Thanks stefanero.  I tried the manual as a first port of call, but while the router seems to be a pretty reliable item, the USR manuals and online help are about as much use as a chocolate fire-guard! ?(

Try as I might, I cannot get the older UDP rule to drop off the table.  Still haven't figured out why I've got such a low ID though.
