no more working on mandrake...
« on: February 16, 2005, 10:47:42 AM »

hi there! until yesterday night i was able to run and use amule as a normal user. this morning i tried to launch it by clicking on the icon but nothing works except for the window "mandrake is trying to open amule"... then nothing happens and i can't see the icon in the system tray.
if i go into the consol and i launch amule as a super user... it works fine again...
what's the problem?
thank you very much in advance!
peste

ops. forgot to say that i'm running the latest version of amule, no problems with the dependencies, on a mandrake 10.1 powerpack. the kernel is the original one (guess 2.6.8.1...)

Please take a console and start amule from the console as the normal user so we can see why amule refuses to work for you.  :)

no more working on mandrake

[gennaro@localhost gennaro]$ amule
Initialising aMule
Userhash loaded: 9EC12FF5E40E42C7403F16AC85076FFC
*** UDP socket at 4665
[gennaro@localhost gennaro]$

that's what I get when i try to launch it in a consol as a normal user...
after it, nothing works and i can't see the program... neither the icon in the system tray.
:S
maybe i should try to  uninstall the program and delete all its folders and reinstall everything?
what makes me wonder is the fact that just yesterday i could use it, i didn't change a thing and this morning... i wasn't able to launch it in the normal way... boh...
thanks for your help and interest in advance

1. Do "amule &" (without ") to put it to background.

2. Do ls | grep emule to check if its running after calling it.

3. Rename ~/.eMule and restart

pestekkorna,

Put some adventure in your computer, compile aMule yourself! You wont regret it :)

I tried to do it... and to be honest I don't really what to do.
I donwloaded the last CVS version. I extracted everything in a folder, then I went in the folder and I did:
./configure, make and make install.
Of course, something didn't work. a prloblem of libs I guess and I don't know what to do to solve the problem.
 ;(
after all, I passed enterely to Linux just 6 weeks ago... I need to learn a lot of things...

pestekkorna,

You probably had a problem with wxGTK, which is broken in most distos. Please look at/read these:
http://www.amule.org/wiki/index.php/Compilation_Installation
http://www.amule.org/wiki/index.php/Main_Page

Most of the time, the problem is solved by removing the distribution's wxGTK and installing the packages from our home page, or by compiling wxGTK yourself:
http://www.amule.org/files/files.php?cat=12

If your distribution is rpm based, your problem can be solved by installing these packages. If you use Debian, then you probably have to compile wxGTK yourself.

There is plenty of information on the wiki, and in case you have doubts, we are here to help you.

Cheers!

Hi! I tried the command to try put it in the background so I can log in as another user and it tells it is already running? Should I start it originally with this command or how do I put aMule in backround exactly?
    Thanks

wolf4914,

To put aMule in the background, just type:
amule &

But if you log out of X, amule will be killed. I don't understand what do you want to do. Do you want to run another copy of aMule in the same machine? Why do you want to do that?

To see if there is a copy of aMule running, type:
ps ax | grep amule

That will show you all the processes that have amule in their name.

Cheers!
