coming from XP...
« on: May 15, 2005, 02:40:58 PM »

Ok, I'm gonna try to explain what am I trying: I would like to have both mules running, winXP and Linux, so it doesn't matter wich OS are you running. For doing so, I moved all the temp files to a FAT32 partition, so both mules can actually see them.
However, I just found out something that may give me problems soon, with all this mixing mule's stuff. I think both config files (eMule and aMule) soon won't be synchronized(credits stuff and things like this), so I may have soon all my downloads messed. How could I move all my aMule config files to the FAT32 partition, so the eMule can use them (just the same) later on? I guess eMule won't be a big problem, in the worst of the cases it should be something like moving the whole program to this partition, but what about the aMule and it's hidden /home/user/.aMule folders?

one question:

why should your downloads get messed up?

of course you can copy everytime the credits.met , preferences.dat & cryptkey.dat files .. but there is no need for it.

cheers

Well, if I start using aMule for a while, the credits and criptkeys may be modified, something that the winXp eMule wouldn't notice having it's own config files. However i just found out that I can move the whole aMule config folder to the fat32 partition, and just leave in /home/timonoj/.aMule links to the real files, in the fat32, so these files are also available for the eMule :)

You have to take a look at what the files mean and how they change...

Interesting for your credits is the preferences.dat and cryptkey.dat, as your userhash is saved in these two files. But they don't change ever!
Interesting for other people's credits is the clients.met which constantly changes.
All pther preferences files are not of any concern here.

So you should (IMO) copy your preferences.dat and cryptkey.dat from one computer to the other and you will always have "your" credits with others...

As a sidenote:
I hope you know that amule and emule will rehash all partfiles every time after the other one has changed it. That can take you quite some (CPU-)time at startup after switching your OS... ;)

Well, I didn't see any rehashing when i started my aMule with the eMule files... However I didn't try the emule again since i did that... I'll let you know how it goes. However, I've got a fast sata HD, so I think it doesn't take quite a lot...

Hashing is more about CPU power, the HDD doesn't matter that much...
