I tried everything to install a more recent version of gcc on Redhat 7.3 but couldn't make it. I still have that limits problem. Is there another file that could be included instead of limits and that would work with gcc 2.96?

Redhat 7.3 ? IMHO it's 3 years old version. gcc 2.96 is buggy beyond any resonable limit. So, don't try so hard - upgrade your install with Fedora Core 4 which coming out

The server I use is a RedHat 7.3
It may be 3 years old but it is still largely used for web servers afaik...
I have a fedora core 3 on my laptop
