Can you connect to servers automatically?
« on: July 09, 2005, 01:00:32 AM »

Just a general question about this whole process - that I'm not exactly understanding.

I have my server list (as normal) you right click on a server and tell it to connect - it's connects as expected.

My question: Should I just work my way through the list and connect to as many servers as I can??

How many servers can I connect to at the same time??

If you should connect to as many as you want - is there a way to configure the program to go find my "15 favorite" servers automatically? (on start up)

Or am I missing the whole boat thing and you don't need to do what I'm doing.

I download things fine - just seems that the more I click - the more users I find.

Appreciate any explanation.
thanks,
-john

You are missing what a server is needed for ;)

First: You can only connect to one server, and that's about all you need. Servers don't give you download, they only give you search results (where you can ask all servers if you do a global search) and a few sources for your downloads which then tell you all the other sources they know (source exchange). If there are no or only very few sources for a file connected to the server you are connected to the server will ask other servers for sources for this file and send them to you once he gets them.

And there is this "autoconnect thingie" on preferences - connection: just check "autoconnect on startup" and "reconnect on loss" and amule will always try to connect to a server :)

[  ] "My question: Should I just work my way through the list and connect to as many servers as I can??"
[X] "Or am I missing the whole boat thing and you don't need to do what I'm doing."

constant server hopping would put a lot of strain on the servers without giving you any real benefit:
a) amule regularly queries all servers in your list for sources anyway (without the whole log-in, publishing file list, etc. stuff)
b) once you have a few sources (which you get easily by connecting to one of the big servers like razorback) you'll get most of the sources through the client-to-client source exchange

so, particularly once you've been downloading a file for 30min, server hopping wouldn't make any measurable difference, except for screwing the servers.

connecting to multiple servers in parallel is pretty much the same story,  see here.

Excellent information / responses.

I understand (a little better now) how this process works now - and I promise to quit server hopping and just be patient

Once again - thank you both for your time
