i'm a first time amule downloader and new mac user... help!
« on: October 17, 2005, 01:55:56 PM »

I just got my first Mac and I can't figure out how to install amule.  Can anyone point me in the direction to get help installing while Wiki is down?  The amule homepage says something about contacting the amule team about getting an article/document emailed, but I don't know who to email.

thanks in advance

Hi,

Go to the aMule.org home page (http://www.amule.org).  Click on the "Download" button on the left side.  In the resulting list of files, scroll down until you find "aMule-Mac-2.0.3.zip".  Click on that.  Then, click on the little picture of a floppy disk.

The aMule zip file should begin downloading.  Depending on your browser, it may be unzipped for you automatically when the download completes.  If not, just double-click on the downloaded zip file.

Now you've got aMule.  :)  Just double-click it to run it.

If you have further questions, check the Mac OS X forum to see if they've already been answered.  If not, feel free to ask.

Thanks for the info Ken.  I thought it should be that easy also, but when i double-clicked the amule application it said it couldn't start because it was damaged or incomplete.  is there something I need to do first?  I'm running Mac OS X Tiger.

Thanks,
Raj

This is getting weirder and weirder...
I just downloaded 2.0.3 again and it works fine here.

Maybe, one or more of the mirrors host a corrupt archive, but then I guess these people should get an error message during the extraction process.

But to be sure, let's see if the archives you guys are downloading are intact:
  • First, make sure you have the original "aMule-Mac-2.0.3.zip" file sitting on your Desktop. If you don't see it there look into your Trash and drag it onto the Desktop.
  • Then we need a Terminal window, so open Applications -> Utilities -> Terminal.
  • Now, copy and paste "md5 ~/Desktop/aMule-Mac-2.0.3.zip" into the Terminal window and hit return
  • If you get "MD5 (/Users/yourusername/Desktop/aMule-Mac-2.0.3.zip) = 8f3c590b3c42db39171f3fb3b0ca175c" your file is intact. If the checksum at the end is different from the one I posted here, then your archive is damaged.
Please report back your results.

i didn't get the same result
« Reply #4 on: October 18, 2005, 02:47:01 AM »

My result was different.  First of all though, my file was named amule-2.0.3.zip (without the "Mac").  I changed to terminal command appropriately.

The result was:

MD5 (/Users/rajsonal/Desktop/aMule-2.0.3.zip) = c0676337b6305ebbaa13f596261cedbe

Should I try to download from a different location?

thanks,
raj

I looked further down the download list and saw the amule-Mac-2.0.3.zip file.  I downloaded it and it worked.

It's always the simple things.  Thanks for the help.

Ahhh -- It all makes sense now. You downloaded the source code before. That is what you need if you want to compile aMule yourself.
So when you clicked on the aMule icon before, you clicked on the empty application package -- no wonder that didn't work.

I'm very glad we finally figured this out, I was already starting to question my sanity... ;)

Maybe we should think about changing the description for the sources to make it more apparent to less experienced users that that is just the source code for compiling amule yourself and not a working program...
