I'm new to linux, even newer to aMule. I'm having trouble downloading anything. whenever I try to get something it goes into "waiting" status and stays there. I've tried connecting to different servers, different files, and different searches, but whenever I try to get something it stays in "waiting". Is there some factor i'm not taking into account?

Okay, I figured out that my firewall is stoping me from getting files. I don't imagine that you would have something on how to fix that? would you?

which firewall are you using?
Ubuntu does not have one per default.

That's just it, I didn't even know I had a firewall. I didn't download one, so the only thing left is my DSL router. It might have a built in firewall, but that thing is just a black box, it doesn't have anybuttons on it or anything. so if the router does have a firewall in it how would I turn it off?

OK, it would be way easier if you'ld know the name of the router.
Usually you access it through a webinterface by typing your routers IP in a browser. Should be explained inside a manual if you got one.
There should be a thingy like 'port forwarding' where you can forward the necessary ports (usually 4662 tcp and 4672 udp) to your pcs IP.
Sorry for this short and hard to understand explanation, but as I already said, it's not easy without knowing with what hardware we're dealing.

okay, I looked at the manual my ISP gave me but it says very little about the router and nothing at all about an IP address for it. But I did look on the bottom of the actual router and it says it's from a company called westell. I don't see an IP adrees on it though.

OK, seems not the well spread.
Try adresses like 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.1.1 in your browser and if this doesn't work find out how's your IP.
You should be able to do this with ifconfig eth1 (if this doesn't work try with eth0). Use this adress with the last digit of one to access the router.
Then you gotta disable the use of DHCP (System->System Administration->Network in the gnome-menu), chose properties of your network adapter->configuration 'static ip', use the ip you found with ifconfig, 255.255.255.0 as ip-adress and your routers adress as gateway->OK
Switch to the DNS-tab and set your routers ip as DNS there.
In the router menu search for a point called 'port forwarding' or similar and forward 4662 tcp and 4672udp to the static ip you just set.

are you getting a high ID (i.e. green arrows in the bottom right corner)?

i've been tearing my hair out trying to get this working, i had a high ID and i was uploading with no problems.  
in the end it seems the files i was choosing (curb yr enthusiasm series 5) were too popular.  i was way back in the queues.  when i left it running for a day, the files started to move.

i'm used to nicotine (soulseek client for linux) so it's just a case of getting used to the differences.

I know for a fact that I have low ID, the arrows were yellowish.

Also, I tryed those IP adresses you gave me and they didn't work. And I found the IP adress for my router by right clicking the panel, clicking "add to panel", and then adding a program called "network monitor". It told me that the IP adress was 192.168.1.97 so I put that in. But it didn't work either X( It told me "the connection was refused when attempting to contact 192.168.1.97".   I'm about to give up on this whole p2p thing.       I don't know how to install limewire, I coun't get nicotine to work, and now this.

Sorry for my crappy and hard-to-understand explanation, I didn't have much time (better: I was already to late) and I'm not an router expert.

yes, I am new at this too, and it seems rather difficult, but I use your messages to learn and do it myself, so let's not give up. I am also at the stage where I have a low ID and want to convert it into a high ID. Please don't give up and keep us posted, so that I can follow.

Ohayo izzzu! (Sorry, I don't speak japanese, I just knew a japanese once.)

Your Mac probably has a firewall, you need to open the specific ports (usually 4662 TCP, 4665 UDP and 4672 UDP dangit, i forgot the tcp+3 some posts earlier).
If you own a router you have to forward these ports to your IP.
First of all we need a static IP in your routers ip-range.
Access via system->system administration->network (or similar) the properties of your network adapter.

The blue underlined number should be in the range between 2 and 254 and only occur once in the network.
Don't forget to set the DNS in the same little program.


Now you're ready to access your router by typing the IP into your browser. (sorry cannot provide screenshots atm, 'cause I disabled wireless config.
It's different on the most routers, but there should be a menu item like 'port forwarding' or in the case of my WRT54G 'application and gaming', where you could forward the necessary ports (as mentioned above)
If you have a more common router, google will show you instructions for your model.

i tried the IP adress for the router and the IP that you gave me. Both resulted in the same mesage

And I know we're on the right track because the little error mesage says "The connection was refused" instead of "It wasn't found". So that means that it's there, it just won't let me go there.
