Better default settings
« on: January 05, 2006, 03:30:10 PM »

I just went through aMule's default settings and here are some suggestions on how to change them:

Code: [Select]
[x] Prompt on exitSince queue positions etc. are lost when quitting aMule accidentally I would enable this option.

Code: [Select]
[ ] Update serverlist when connecting to a server
[ ] Update serverlist when a client connect(s)
These days, most servers you get through these options are fake servers, so I would just turn them off.

Code: [Select]
[x] Safe connectI'm not so sure on this one, but it seems like this would be a good option to enable.

Code: [Select]
[x] Save 10 sources on rare files
This one we should definitively enable in my opinion.

Code: [Select]
[ ] Auto-update ipfilter at startup
We don't provide a default url, so I am not sure why we have this enabled.

Code: [Select]
[ ] Show fast ED2K Links handler
I think we should turn this off. Having the ed2k links handler on the search page should be enough. It just steals a lot of space on the other pages.

Finally, I'd like to suggest that aMule automatically downloads a server.met when the current list is empty, so that new users don't have to press the server.met download button manually.

I agree, except sources save (that's advances feature, and is better off by dfault), and safe connect (not needed at all - is just for strange lowid problems).

Does "save sources" consume a significant amount of time during shutdown or why do you think it would be better left turned off? I am trying to imagine other potential downsides but this is the only one I can come up with...

well, now that's reduced to 2 hours time, it might be ok to have it default...

I exactly agree with lionel77.
deltaHF, would be nice if You named a reason for disabling auto prio.

Delta, why would you want to disable the auto-prio setting? I always considered that a handy feature...

Hi,
I have personal experience that internet providers tries to "protect" their customers by enabling the firewall for all incoming traffic, so nobody can "disturb" the customer.

This causes that the provider's customer always gets LowID when using the P2P networks and never can get the HighID (unless he is able to establish the SSH tunnel on another internet connected computer - but this is not my case (unfortunately)).

So the user has to establish connections with other P2P users and those user usually uses the P2P default TCP port settings...= 4662 port.

This port is not very popular in internet provider's eyes, so the providers very often forces the customers to sign up the FairUserPolicy which usually means that "those very famous P2P ports" are disabled or the connection speed is much more slower that the connection itself.

So I have decided to ask for new "feature" of aMule which will:
1.) Automatically selects the TCP port from default TCP port range (4662 - 54000 ?)
2.) Enables automatic TCP port generation (again from some range). Something like this:
[ ] Generate TCP port from range on startup

This will cause that P2P users will use different TCP ports so it will not be so easy to determine if the port is used by P2P or not.

=> This will lead to higher connection speeds for LowID users (who have no choice to connect as HighID)

What do you think about it?

rstribrn:
I think if your provider messes with you like that, it's time to shop for a new provider. Even if all ed2k clients would now switch to random ports, a provider like that could just employ other techniques like packet type based traffic shaping or even complete filtering. So, the only real option is to vote with your wallet and to take your business somewhere else.

But back to the default settings. I just realized that "Update serverlist when connecting to a server" and "Update serverlist when a client connect(s)" are still on by default. There are so many junk servers these days that I really think we should deactivate those two features by default.
I would also still vote for turning off "Show fast ED2K Links handle", because I think having the handler on the search page is enough.
