many sources on search - few sources for download
« on: March 03, 2006, 03:07:04 PM »

I was using amule 2.0.3 from suse 10.0
Today I downloaded 2.1.0 and compiled it.

The problem: I connect, I have a high ID (however Kad is off for 2.1.0).

If I search for some source on the search window I may get many sources, from tens to even thousands.  When I start downloading invariably the number of sources is much reduced.  An example:

source X has 20(20) when I search
it has 5(0) when I start downloading

source Y has 1623(227) when I search
it has 0(0) when downloading

all of my downloads show XX(0) sources.

Even though I share 5-6 Gigabytes of files nobody is uploading.

I also have the clear impression that disconnecting and restarting increases the number of sources and even starts some downloading - I actually read some post from people saying this a known problem and it had been fixed on 2.1.0, that's why I downloaded 2.1.0.

If anybody can give me a hint where should I go to fix this I appreciate.

ankanaan,

We need more information about your connection to diagnose something. If you get a high ID, this situation is strange, indeed.

The only thing I can imagine is that if you use your DSL modem as a router and you configured it to do port forward on the TCP port (after all, you get a high ID), maybe you have forgotten to forward one of the two UDP ports too. One of them is used for source asking, and this could explain something. If that is the case, please, forward the two UDP ports too.

Anyway, I am not sure this will help, I'm just guessing.

Good luck!

Hi Phoenix,

thanks for your message, I double checked my modem port forwarding table and am including some log information on amule.

the little world on the bottom right of my amule screen has a green arrow down left, and a yellow arrow up right, according to http://www.amule.org/wiki/index.php/Usage_Statusbar this means:

Both the ed2k and Kad networks are connected, but the Kad network is firewalled

the above is true for amule 2.1.0.  If I run 2.0.3 both arrows are green.

anyway, this is my modem forward table:

1   10.1.1.4   TCP   4662   4662
2   10.1.1.4   UDP   4672   4672

4   10.1.1.4   UDP   4665   4665
5   10.1.1.4   TCP   4661   4661

And this is the log I get when I start amule 2.1.0:

You UDP port is closed, that explains the kad firewalled AND the lack of sources.

Hi guys, thanks for your messages and suggestions.

I downloaded a new server.met

I am connected to byte devils.

I Still don't connect to kademlia using 2.1.0 (I am getting Kad off most often, it does change to Kad firewalled sometimes).  Using 2.0.3, kademlia seems connected (at least the two arrows are green).

As for the closed UDP I am sorry but I don't understand what you mean:

this is what I see on  amule's log:

2006-03-05 10:33:55: MuleUDPSocket: Created Server UDP-Socket at port 4665
2006-03-05 10:33:55: MuleUDPSocket: Created Client UDP-Socket at port 4672

my netstat:
linux /root# netstat -lnptu | grep '/amule *$'
tcp 0 0 0.0.0.0:4662 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN 30974/amule
udp 0 0 0.0.0.0:4665 0.0.0.0:* 30974/amule
udp 0 0 0.0.0.0:4672 0.0.0.0:* 30974/amule

my modem rules are:

1 10.1.1.4 TCP 4662 4662
2 10.1.1.4 UDP 4672 4672
4 10.1.1.4 UDP 4665 4665
5 10.1.1.4 TCP 4661 4661

So, as far as I can see amule uses two UDP ports and have forwarded both on my modem.

In short, my problem still happens.  Maybe the problem is with the UDP port, which you guys say is closed and I think is open.

Thanks for your help,

A

The two green arrows only indicate that you are connected to a server with a HighID ;)

well, then, I was reading 2.1.0 arrow meanings and applying them to 2.0.3 :-)

now, I did connect to byte devils (199.249.181.11:4662) and still have the same problem.

currently kad is off - not firewalled (and I donwloaded a fresh server.met)

I actually downloaded some 50Mb (of 350Mb for one particular source) today but the number of download sources is annoyingly small (on the search window it is showing 18(11) and on the tranfer it shows 4(0)).  And still, I don't see anybody downloading stuff from me :-(

well, I will see if I ask some guys at work tomorrow see if anybody has any new ideas.

thanks for the help so far.

btw for kad to work you need to update your nodes.dat as you need to update server.met for ed2k...

have you done that?

nope, I didn't know I had to do that... sorry.
I did it and now kademlia is connected.
I see people getting stuff from me.

I am still firewalled though.
Under kademlia status tab it says:

"Firewalled state: no buddy"

I have read a lot of the stuff under the amule wiki pages and haven't seen any of these suggestions, can somebody indicate some reading for me?  I don't want to be bugging you guys too much with something stupid I may be doing :-)

thanks for your help so far, cheers,  A

for kad to turn ok you need all 3ports forwared correctly to your linux box, 1tcp and 2 udp, if that is ok..then kad should turn from firewalled to ok also after a while

I read on a previous post that I had to wait.  So I waited a couple hours before sending the previous message.  It was still firewalled.  Now one night later and it is not firewalled anymore.  Thanks to all of you for all the help with this.

a suggestion / question: can't the default server preferences be set to

"auto update serverlist at startup"

some fools like myself might not waste people's time on this list if this were on.

keep up the good job, amule is great!

ankanaan,

Another suggestion: use port values different from the default values. Maybe your ISP is filtering these ports.

Also, do note that you have a very slow uplink connection, with 75 Kbits/s up, you should leave about 4 Kbytes/s in the upload configuration. More than that may harm your download speed.

Cheers!

allright Phoenix,  this was the final move.  I changed the port numbers and now I get Kad connected always.  For a few days it was connected sometimes, firewalled sometimes.  I wonder if the ISP guys are opening and closing those ports?  Anyway, I am downloading happily.

Also, lowering my upload speed improved my download speed, I was just trying to be nice :-)

cheers,
