Did you hear of DADVSI
« on: March 19, 2006, 03:45:14 PM »

I don't know where to post this but I think it's the better place.

In France a new law called DADVSI has just been voted that could have severe consequences on open source project related to file sharing or DVD playing.

The people at videolan.org has already reacted. You can find more about this here
http://www.videolan.org/eucd.html

What do you think about that ? Did you hear of it ?

I've decided to move it to the small talk, cause it's not related to aMule at all and hence it shouldn't be in aMule news.

Hmm, it's at least a little related to aMule:

Here is a non-exhaustive list of free software that are impacted:

    * VLC (reads DVD, works around iTunes DRM)
    * Mplayer (reads DVD)
    * Totem (reads DVD)
    * More generally, any free software DVD player
    * Bittorent (P2P, could be used for illegal sharing)
    * eMule and all its variants (P2P, could be used for illegal sharing)
    * Sharpmusique (works around iTunes DRM)
    * FairTunes (works around iTunes DRM)
    * Any software that works around any DRM, either on music files or others

I don't know where the post was, but since most of the forum has the topic of *technical* support this is definitely the place for this discussion ^^

Oh, damnit, I overlooked these lines when I read the text. I really like to download images via BitTorrent  because I don't want to cause costs to the maintainers of a free project and when I'm in France it's illegal to have such a software installed?
And I am forced to use Windows and a commercial DVD-player when I want to see a legally bought DVD ? (I don't have a external DVD-Player)
This law is somehow ... strange. I guess I have to learn some Russian to get out of this crap...

You right, wuischke, and for that reason, when the final vote is done, I'll have to remove all rpms of amule and amule-cvs from my own site, or I'll deserve a 30.000 euros fee. We here are back 60 years in the past.

Right, and with this stupid law, this is IMHO  the best thing they could do for the sake of open source in France. There are enough mirroirs out of France not to be stupid risking n-times 300.000 € fees. This government  is a band of dumb-asses who don't know what means internet.  I guess they think urls are stopped at the border to pass customs  :rolleyes:
