MSVC 2005 compilation
« on: January 10, 2009, 10:49:42 AM »

Hey Stu,

from the changelog I suppose it was you who upgraded the MSVC solution to ver. 2008. Could you be so kind and keep the older 2k5 version included? Would be really nice...thx in advance.

Regards,

Actually it was Kry iirc. Anyway, I don't have a 2005 studio installed (it doesn't behave well installed in parallel with the 2008 studio), so it would be kind of hard to keep the project files up-to-date. And since the 2008 express edition is available for free I don't really see a need for it.

...however there are still enough people out there who either can't afford switching with *every* new generation of software or just *can't* change because they're productively developing their entire portfolio on 2005 and can't switch within the blink of an eye...you said it yourself: VS's installed in parallel don't behave modest.

I don't really see a need for it.
That's nice...not really user-friendly and frankly, a little short-sighted. The life-cycle of "big" software can easily reach up to a decade and even longer. You may say "As developer you aren't considered a user that needs support in terms of a software life-cycle like an end-user". Well, that may be right however the boundaries between user and developer are somewhat blurry in the open-source world. And responding "aMule's just a little project for enthusiasts" wouldn't do aMule justice, now would it?

How does keeping the anything but obsolete 2k5 project files within an MSVC-retired folder which won't be officially supported until let's say 2k5 is *really* obsolete when 2k10 gets released hurt?

@Kry
a little mercy? *cry*

Users, especially Windows users, don't need to compile it, since we provide binaries. I can't provide anything I can't create or support, and I won't spend my own, private and unpaid time for it.

What software? MSVC or aMule? And what's your point?

You may say "As developer you aren't considered a user that needs support in terms of a software life-cycle like an end-user".
Lol. If you need support in terms of a software life-cycle, you gotta pay for it. Even for Linux, which is free, but support of which isn't. As long as you keep paying me I keep supporting you.  :P

And responding "aMule's just a little project for enthusiasts" wouldn't do aMule justice, now would it?
That's just what it is. It can't compete with Linux, Firefox, whatever, and the devs sure are a bunch of enthusiasts. Try asking on a forum and get response from a real dev (even for plain noob questions) on any other OS project.

If someone (like you) provides them we sure can discuss it.

aMule. And my point is that just because VS2k8 is released and obviously currently used by the core dev-team it doesn't mean that the 2k5 project files aren't needed anymore.

Your point? Of what use to me is your answer "I see no point"?

Hrhr...sometimes I'm led to believe you WANT to misunderstand people... :P yourself :-)
Yes, I'm talking about support for me as an "enthusiastic user" who wants more than just download a binary. And that support I'm asking consists of shipping old project files.

Now you got it a little backwards...I was the one asking for them in the first place. And it's not like I asked for the wheel to be re-invented, just for s.th. to be (re-)included in the tarballs which already exists!  :o

It doesn't exist, that's the point you're missing. I could send you the old projects from before the conversion, sure, but they wouldn't build current SVN of course as they are missing all changes since. So where do you think the project files you want should come from?

Ahh...now we're getting back on track. Thx for revealing that fact. Then I'll just pull those files out of an older snapshot.

Couldn't you just have said so in your first post? Why does the simplest question have to mutate to a philosophical discussion with you?  :-*
