Abnormal use of CPU when i'm in the "Transfers" window.
« on: September 18, 2010, 02:03:33 PM »

Hi all,
i'm using aMule 2.2.6 on OS GNU/Linux Fedora 13 64-bit with kernel 2.6.35.4-26.fc14.x86_64 and xorg-x11-drv-intel-2.12.0-1.fc13.x86_64.
My laptop is an Acer 1810TZ (cpu: Intel SU4100 | chipset: Mobile Intel®GS45 Express | vga: Intel GMA 45OOM | ram: 2GB | hdd: 250GB | lcd: 11.6" HD LED | wlan: 802.11 b/g/Draft-N | battery: 6 cell Li-ion).

When i'm in the "Transfers" window, my laptop have an abnormal use of CPU and i can see a lag of the software to my command (like when i try to go up and down on the list of the files in download or if i try to click with the right key of the mouse in the file for manage the extended options).
I see the lag even in other software if i have aMule in the "Transfers" window, like Opera browser for example.
Actually i have 37 files in download (with only 740 found sources, they are files not very share), but i have the same problem if i try download only 10 files and stop the other.

The problem is persistent, even when i navigate in the "Transfers" window i have this abnormal use of CPU, even if i reboot the laptop.
If i leave aMule in another window (like "Statistics") and minimize it in the tray bar i don't have any problem; but if i try to leave it in "Transfers" windows and minimize it in the tray bar i can see the CPU continue to have an abnormal use.

I hope to give you a clear bug report.
If i can be useful don't hesitate to contact me.
Thanks for your software, i enjoy it!

i apologise for my poor English.
I've read this often here. And like always, your English is near perfect.  :D
(And you can strike the "near" if you type "I" instead of "i".)

So is almost everybody here.

Did you compile aMule yourself? If yes, did you enable optimization? You always should.
There are performance problems in the transfer window, but 37 files should work fine.
What's the average size of your downloads?
What happens if you disable progress bars?
Stopping downloads should have no effect (as you noticed).
Have you tried the SVN version?

Hi Stu,
I installed aMule by RPM Fusion repository. I haven't try to compile by myself a software and honestly I don't know how to do that. But I'm a curious person, I enjoy to learn new things. I install Linux for that!
In this moment the average size of my files is 2,35GB (but I have a lot of files that are between 4GB and 6GB).

If I disable the progress bar the problem disappear, but I saw also that the problem become less fastidious if I reduce the size of the progress bar. I mean the size just enough for see the percentage of file progress. The use of CPU in this case is still abnormal (a little less than before) but it doesn't produce a lot of lag problems in the use of aMule or other software.
I also tried to use the flat style for the progress bar and i saw that the problem was less important.

I didn't try the SVN version, do you think I should try it?

Ps.: thanks for the great words about my English, but I have to study a lot  ;D

With large files at about 50% completion you have lots of gaps and complicated progress bars. That could explain it.
We did some optimizations to the progress bar code in the SVN version. So if you have performance problems you could give it a try.
There are a lot of articles about compilation in the Wiki.
