All the network slows a lot! Bug?
« on: October 14, 2004, 07:05:10 PM »

Hello, folks,

Sorry I have registered for posting a possible bug -- aMule is wonderful, nice, easy to use, really great. I have been using it for some days and got a lot of files with it. However, a strange behaviour forced me to use eDonkey/Overnet hybrid (disgusting).

My home network has an Altavia ADSL modem, a hub and two PCs, one with Winblows (my brother´s) and mine with GNU-Linux. From some 5 days ago, I noticed that when I connect to a server with aMule all the internet traffic gets REALLY SLOW, through ALL the network -- I mean, not only I can´t open sites and IMs, but my brother too! He says he had a problem like this before when running eMule. The same problem does not happen with Overnet/eDonkey for Linux.

I have read some other posts here and tried to reduce the Maximal Connections variable from 500 to 250, but it did not work. It looks like the software is causing a conflict with ports/IP addressing and forwarding on the network. I am using the default ports 4662 and 4672, which are opened by a NAT rule implemented in the modem´s firmware.

If it´s not a bug, what would you suggest?

Thanks in advance,

Have you limited your upload-rate? That can really kill the connection, if you dont.

you have to limit, in this preference order (beggining with the one that most affects and ending with the one that less effect has on the slow down problem):
1) upload limit
2) hard limit connections
3) max sources per file
4) Download limit

Go play with those values and you'll get a nice aMule connection and a nice connection for any other app.
Greetings!

I would suggest starting with this values, and going up, until you fiongd an optimal:

Max connections /5 sec = 10
Max connections = 70
Max sources = 100

I use these values, on both aMule and eMule, and they work just fine.

Regards.

Just did not work, people.... I used Skolnick´s values and the same problem happened again: the site will never finish loading, Kopete´s connections go out... everything works again when I close aMule. Have you got any clue of what´s happening?

what's happenning is that aMule generates too much traffic. are you on dial-up?
keep lowing those values untill everything is just fine, that's the only soltion. same as with eMule.

Please tell us your actual bandwidth limits.

Still trying...

... and same things happen. It´s not dialup, as I´ve said in the first post: it is an ADSL connection with approx. 600kbps download speed, from a Parks Altavia 670 modem (GlobespanVirata firmware); and an Encore 8-port switcher plugged to it which distributes the connection to the local network.

I have changed the TCP port to 4665 and now I can get HighIDs easier. But as soon as I try to connect to a server with aMule, the whole network performance goes down and sometimes the traffic stops.

Special notes again:

1) The problem does not happen with eDonkeyclc (core) + ed2k GUI (which is terribly ugly and lacks a lots of aMule funcionalities)

2) My brother says he had the same problem with eMule for Winblows and other P2P softwares until he installed Overnet.

Maybe this info helps. Have you ever heard of anything like that? I have tried Google but I´ve got answers to a lot of other FAQs, but none about this in particular.

Thank you,

Fabricio

Try this link: http://www.sonicspike.net/software/, and download/install dsl_qos_queue, if it fits in your system. You may customize the queues, eg. 1 queue for HTTP traffic, 1 for aMule, 1 others... I bet you can find it out for yourself.
