Amule doesn't start new Downloads
« on: September 11, 2005, 02:20:04 PM »

Hi

I have experienced an issuel with the current Amule CVS that i want you to know. Always when i add new downloads to Amule, they don't start and get 0 sources. I have to restart Amule to get the downloads to work (then, sources are found). What is this, and is there a possibility to fix?

Anyway, Amule's just great  8)

bug report is already there since a long time, problem is we cannot track it,

how did you add the file to download? search? or ed2k link?

does changin server help? instead of restart?!

I tried adding the download per Ed2k Link as well as searching and starting the dl in the client. I experienced the issue in both ways. A server change doesn't solve this either  :(.

i have the same problem
and even kad doesnt help here
it seems the sources are only collected at startup and after that only via source exchange.
sometimes after some hours, amule finds 1 or 2 sources (maybe passive). after connecting to them, it get all other sources via source exchange.

is there any special (debug) information i should focus on?

I reported this problem long ago but was unable to give many details, now i am.

I've been having and observing the problem since 2.0.3 and then in all the following cvs tarballs and i have gotten to the conclusion that  amule doesnt start new donwloads that are not popular.

If the file is very popular (doesnt matter wheter you searched for it and then added or was added with an elink) amule will find sources for it  and will start downloading it  as usual, but, on the contrary, if  the file is not popular and only few people have it  the only way to find those sources and start donwloading is to restart amule.

Ive been observing this for long and now i can say im sure about this, can anyone of the developers have a look at it? I'll be happy to do any testing you require.

Thanks people!

BTW Im using:
Debian Sarge
aMule CVS using wxGTK1 v2.6.1

EDIT: I edit the post to include this image where you can see two files that were added at the same time, the one on top got many sources and the other -not so popular file- is still with zero sources.

Same problem here:

activated options "add new files in paused mode" and "resume next paused file when one file is finished" in the preferences.

Files that where added to to the download queue (paused) and later get resumed automatically (another file was completed) do not get sources.

(some yes after hours, some not)

Using Debian Sarge with aMule 2.0.3 and wxGTK 2.6.1 (dude.gemil.de Packages)

I cant believe no developer replied about this. No one cares?

IMHO basic functionality comes before new features.

If someone is already looking into this it would be nice to post  a reply to let us know.

Thanks!

feralertx,

Can you give me a recipe to reproduce the bug? If this involves certain file names, you can send it to me in a private message.

By the way, there is a known issue. After a few days working, aMule 2.0.3 does not download new files. To check that we are talking about the same issue, please tell me the value of these fields AT THE MOMENT OF FAILURE:

Statistics->Connections->Active Connections (estimate)
Statistics->Clients->Has Sockets: (only in debug enabled versions of aMule)
Preferences->Connections->Max Connections

And, regarding your statement about caring, yes, we all care, but we also have to deal with our real lives. If you can give us a fully reproducible way to generate the bug I bet it will be fixed ASAP. On the other hand, vague statements tend to be ignored, because the devs don't have the resourses to keep trying to reproduce your bug by trial and error.

Also, if you look carefully, you will find that stefanero has more than one star below his name (actualy, he has four!), and that means he is part of aMule team, and he made lots of replies. So rest assured, we all read the forums, and we all discuss every issue.

Cheers!

Hi Phoenix, thanks for replying.

Well, at least for me, i can reproduce it everytime i run amule (with every cvs of amule since and including 2.0.3), and it doesnt happen in a concrete and/or specific moment but always. How to do it in other machines? no idea.

This is a totally separate issue mate as anyone who had actually read the whole thread would now. The problem we are pointing out here is that amule doesnt find sources for new added files so they never get downloaded, doesnt matter whether amule has been running for 2 minutes, 2 days or 2 months, BUT if you restart amule, it will find sources for those files and download them as usual.

In my point of view we are just users with no technical knowledge so i think is you people who should tell us what to do and look for not to make this a 'vague statement', you have to help us help you.

Fine, but i after his replys, i have tried to contribute with -what i think are- more and new details and thats when ive had no response. My point is that if you ask people to help you track down bugs, when they do so they deserve at least a reply, even if its a negative one. Because it would be easier for me and others to just wait until the problem gets resolved with the help of someone else and dont get involved and bothered, but we, on the other hand, take the time to post and be willing to do beta testing.

Please do not take me wrong, i do not demand the bug to get fixed, i just ask for a reply to let me know that the effort i take to try to find it and report it its not time wasted.

And before all, im aware of your selfless hard work and do apreciate it a lot, and if you found my latest post offensive in any way i do apologize since it wasnt, at all, in that way.

Regards.

To be fair, I keep thinking it's a fake servers issue.
