High ID causes WiFi router to hang
« on: July 21, 2006, 06:03:58 AM »

so, i've been using amule for some time now, and recently got a wireless router.  Whenever I have the correct firewall and port forwarding settings on, the router will spontainiously knock everyone offline, and become unresponsive.  This happens within minutes of connection.  I have to close amule and reboot the router to get the connection back.  the strange thing is, if port 4556 (i use all default port #s) is blocked either at the router or my local firewall, everything works fine (other than low id).
the really bizzare thing is, if i use a regular wired router, this doesnt ever come up, yet this is the second wireless router i've experienced this with.  it also exibits this problem when i use either wifi or ethernet.
I've tried a few things to fix this, but no luck.  lowering the # of connections per 5 seconds,  lowering # of max connections, lowering upload/download limit, no difference.
So does anyone have any advice?  if you want i can post more details.  I'd like to get this resolved -- my roommate insists the problem stems from "********** linux,"   but i know better.  although it doesnt really look too good.  thanks for any help

Lower these even more and try to disable KAD. Let's say your router is not very good and you can blame the router. If it's possible try to use a wired connection for aMule, it's better.

(At home I'm running aMule sometimes on my laptop over the wireless connection of my Linksys WRT54g and I have no problems. But for many people with worse routers occured this problem in connection with eMule. For some did help disabling KAD for others it was sufficent to lower the settings.)

try to lower also your

-> max connections
-> max connections / 5secs

the cheap rotuers have only a limmited routing table, so if that is full (because of many connections) your router hangs

well, I tried what you guys said, but it doesnt seem to help.  i've got max connections /sec at 5, and max connections at like < 10, but no luck, even with kad off.  In fact, after a certain point it seemed to get worse.  i'm kind of stumped.  could it be my isp?  that's the only other difference i can think of.  anyone know a good router that won't explode when i turn my computer on?  i have a netgear WGR14v6.  also a d-link DI-524 did this, but even worse (in the sense that it would have to be physically rebooted, not how often it went wrong)

no more suggestions here, those points mentioned usually fix the router issue.

you could try it with a cable instead of wireless to find out if that makes a difference. but if you need wireless I doubt thats a long term sulution

so, when you say cable, do you mean
1:   [my computer] -> ethernet -> [router] -> ethernet ->[cable modem]
(as apposed to [comp] )))> wifi )))> [router] -> ethernet -> [modem])
or
2:  [comp] -> ethernet -> [modem]?

i already tried #1 with no luck.

thanks.
p.s.  --  sorry about the giant gap between replies.

I'm in the same situation here.  i'm getting online tech support from Netgear, but that hasn't helped either.
