crashes on launch, please HELP
« on: July 24, 2006, 09:00:08 AM »

i am working on an intel based MAC, after downloading the zip file and unpacking it the program crashes, it doesent even install any directories it just dies. i tryied several servers and i tryied both available downloads.
the amule symbol appers for a split second and disapear & the program crashes.

now i know the problem is addressed at the end of this page and i have used the terminal thingy and added the "/Contents/MacOS/amule" and it opened it, but then i got these messeges

my questions  are:
1. is there a patch to fix this one command line or am i doomed to open the terminal every time as i have to do right now?
2. why isnt it locatin any servers list or any of the files it should locate? is there a patch for that as well?

by the way this is the string of the terminal at start up:
BENs-MAC:~ Ben$ /Applications/aMule.app/Contents/MacOS/amule
Initialising aMule
Checking if there is an instance already running...
No other instances are running.
Loading temp files from /Users/Ben/Library/Application Support/aMule/Temp.

All PartFiles Loaded.
ListenSocket: Ok.

External connections disabled in config file
*** Server UDP socket (TCP+3) at 0.0.0.0:4665
*** TCP socket (TCP) listening on 0.0.0.0:4662
*** Client UDP socket (extended eMule) at 0.0.0.0:4672
Empty dir /Users/Ben/Documents/aMule Downloads/ shared

AND THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT THIS IS THE CRASH REPORT FROM THE TERMINAL:
Current version is: aMule 2.1.3 using wxMac v2.7.0 (Unicoded)
Running on: MacOS (Darwin 8.5.0 Power Macintosh)

This seems to indicate that you're running the PowerPC version of aMule under Rosetta.  This is known to be unstable.

Please make sure you have downloaded the Universal Binary version of aMule (for Tiger).

Also, don't worry about the messages in aMule's log about missing files.  These files are missing because aMule hasn't gotten around to creating them yet.  However, in order to use aMule, you will want to download a server.met file.  Click the blue triangle button next to the URL on the ED2K network screen to download a server.met file.

In the Finder, do a Get Info on the aMule application.  It should say "Kind: Application (Universal)".  Also make sure the checkbox "Open using Rosetta" is not checked.

i am running an intel based mac with 10.4.7 (tiger), i have downloaded the 2.1.3 universal version of amule

i used the "Contents/MacOS/amule" fix on the terminal and it styarted the software up but the software didnt want to find any list of servers and continued to cry out that:

First, I merged the new thread (the above 3 posts) that you had created with this one because both threads seem to be dealing with the same problem and spreading things over multiple threads usually just creates redundancy and confusion.

Speaking of confusion, I'm a little confused about when aMule crashes and when not. You seem to be saying that aMule runs fine when started through the Terminal but not when started through the Finder. Is that correct?

EDIT:
Looks like you have out-posted me. ;)

What this is saying that you are still running aMule through Rosetta emulation (if you have an Intel Mac) or that your Mac is actually not an Intel Mac.

I'm very puzzled -- it should really not be rocket science to run aMule natively on your machine...

I'll try to get my hands on an Intel Mac soon to get an impression of how things work there.

i have exactly the same problem, i've got an Intel-based iMac 10.4.8 Tiger, and amule 2.1.3 won't launch at all after unpacking. the program quits unexpectedly 2 seconds after being opened. it doesn't even create 'amule' folder in the Library. same thing with amule 2.1.2. same thing with CVS - it quits even faster ?( here's the terminal thingy for 2.1.3:

This is so puzzling. Metlob, your backtrace also indicates that aMule runs through the Rosetta emulation on your machine, which it shouldn't.

Just to double check, did you follow ken's advice?
Quote
In the Finder, do a Get Info on the aMule application. It should say "Kind: Application (Universal)". Also make sure the checkbox "Open using Rosetta" is not checked.

If that does not fix your problem I can only hope ken stumbles over this thread again soon.
