global firewall?
« on: January 05, 2007, 07:53:34 PM »

Hi, could you please tell me whether you are successful searching and downloading anything right now? I am connected to a server that claims to have 232071328 files and 1105101 users, the aMule bar says there are 25,68M users, and 3,02G files, I have HighID and connected with Kad, but searches reports no results at all, even generic ones on file type. Can you tell right away what is your situation? Is there some sort of national/european/global firewall that has been activated?

I disconnected from the Ed2K servers. Now I am connected to Kad only and have about 200 nodes. Kad search returns a message from aMule, saying: "Search warning: aMule is not connected." The network info for Kad says:

Kademlia Status: Running
Status: connected
connection status: firewalled
firewalled state: no buddy
average users: 128
average files: 22k

It took a while to connect. The icon in the lower right corner is red and yellow, so I guess I am still not connected.

My osx firewall says:

TCP Ports 4662
UDP ports 4672, 4665

both are open, and aMule's testport on TCP is successful.
OSX's UDP traffic is not blocked in the system preferences.

Kademlia does not bootstrap here.

If I reconnect to the ED2K net via the old method, I have uploads, but no downloads, and the Kad net is still firewalled without buddy.

....

I learned that it connects via Kad only-if it is first connected to a server. It then downloads a node and the Kad bootstraps.  The arrows are green now, and queries are back. I think it is a problem with the net (I disconnected from the ISP and then reconnected).

...

My old downloads list Kad nodes, but none is uploading. I suspect there are modified versions of eMule/aMule that are not uploading.

rufus,

With respect to ED2K servers, there are two possible reasons why you wouldn't be getting search results for common terms.  First, you may be connected to a fake server.  Try a known good one, like ed2k://|server|62.241.53.16|4242|/ which is DonkeyServer No 2.

Also, you need to be using a relatively modern version of aMule.  Use aMule 2.1.3 or one of lionel77's SVN builds.  Many servers have changed the protocol for searching, and older clients which use the old protocol will get no results.

I hope that helps.
