i was trying bittorrent but silly me couldnt figure it out (hey, you get a bit too convenient as old-bie windows user), then tried xmule and i didnt manage to install it
then i looked at the last choice, amule, and easily found a detailed howto (from source, even though i use debian, i prefer to compile small programs from source whenever possible, and resort back to packages when i run into problems)
The amazing thing was - and for this i am very glad - amule worked without a single bug message!
Only after amule worked, i had the time (or wanted) to read some more including forum things, and i think i love it already (was using emule under windows, and was very happy, prior to that i used kazaa lite and soulseekt, and it was ok)
I think other forums are the best way to hear about good P2P clients, for example without forums i would have never found out that you can use usenet to share files
