i tested aMule 2.0 rc4 for mac os x...
« on: July 17, 2004, 12:51:40 AM »

and i have to say that i am very pleased with what i saw! i think this could really become the best edonkey client for mac. sadly for the moment there is an inredible hurdle with all those things you have to install. thanks to the following page i could install all this stuff: http://www.amule.org/wiki/index.php

if the beta stadium is finished could it be possible that you just download a compressed image file for mac os x with the amule application in it?it would be wonderful to just get a single file and you have just to drag it in your applications folder and that's it.

i am not a developer or something but i would really like to help you with this application. i can be a mac os x 10.3.4 betatester if you want so... just contact me! but first here is something i really would like to tell me opinion:

i am a little bit shocked by the interface! mac users are always keen of simple and effective interfaces and in addition i am a graphics artist so the judgment will be hard...

you can't use those seperating dark grey fields (don't know what's their correct name ;-) ) to give the window a certain hirarchy. it just doesn't look right on mac os x! the search window is a very good example for this (see examples below).

check images in the following post

i just looked a little bit at the apple user interface guidelines and this is why my proposition for the search window now looks like this :-D

here are the links if you like to read a little bit:

Apple Software Design Guidelines: http://developer.apple.com/documentation/MacOSX/Conceptual/AppleSWDesign/index.html

Apple Human Interface Guidelines: http://developer.apple.com/documentation/UserExperience/Conceptual/OSXHIGuidelines/index.html

maybe it could still be refined (mostly the icons) but i think it shows what i mean. i would really like to help you to enhance the interface so that it is appealing and you like to use it every day. please post your comments. thanks and go on with the great work!

NOTE: there is a help button in the lower right corner on every window. this is very important for new users because they can directly jump to the online (or local) help where every interface part is explained.

i also posted the standard preferences window as an example for the preferences window. it hinks this concept is the best choice if you have so much preference sections (11). in fact it works exactly like the system options on windows xp: a lot of icons you can click on (those represent the different sections like sharing, gui tweas, network etc) and if clicked it shows you the options you can define. in addition there is a buttom on the left top corner to go back to the options overview.

Boo!

Sorry for the late reply, but we've been preparing 2.0.0-rc4b.

Your screenshots look great, let's say a couple of things:

a) Yes, I hate search page at it's actual state. We all do.

b) Somehow, some of your GUI screenshots seem to waste space. Really. Specially the servers one.

c) The buttons on toolbar should have text, I know ;) They ahve on all other platforms, on Mac it's a wx bug and that's why they don't have. Will be fixed as soon as I have time ;)

d) Yes, we'll have compressed images available once the beta is somehow usable.

And now for the main problem : Designing a multiplatform interface. aMule's interface is half done via wxDesigner, half hard-coded. You know how evil would be to code a full interface just for Mac? But maybe is worth the effort :) Anyway, only after the first Mac stable version is out and running.

I haev to say again : nice job! Is there any way you can join #amule channel on irc and talk to me on realtime? I want to make some proposals to you.

i think it would be very difficult to implement this gui because i think auried made it with interface builder that is only for mac and use a mac framework, this would only be possible if there was a gui/core separation so that this mac only gui could be built using interface builder.

aside from the user interface rawness, which I can put aside,
amule quits after max 10 mins of activity with an abort trap.

This even if I do not connect to any server.
I have successfully compiled amule RC5, though I'm not sure to have changed the dc.cpp file in the wxMac compilation. Could be that the reason of my troubles?

... I wish you the best encouragements for the Mac Development Version since other progs (mldonkey f.e.) are not very productive and tricky to use/configure. Bye!

ASTIOBOY:
Please, open new thread to talk about non-related issues. I don't think auried will be very happy to see his thread has been broken to talk about some compilation problem ;)
dc.cpp is no longer needed on wxMac 2.5.2 and that's the exact version you should use. Take a new look to the Mac HowTo at http://www.amule.org/wiki/index.php/HowTo_compile_on_Mac
No more replies on this issue here, please. Open new thread :-)
Greetings!

You're right.
Though, if you read carefully, mine is not  a compilation problem  :(
but runtime test of latest aMule which was thread subject.

... anyway, I'm better opening a new thread. Ciuz!

Same problem as Astioboy: amule crash after a few minutes with an Abort Trap. Any idea how to fix it?
