Memory units

I think we really should change units according to this:
http://physics.nist.gov/cuu/Units/binary.html
 
i.e., changing kb, MB and GB to KiB, MiB and GiB

Kernel and coreutils already do this.

The IEC was about 4 decades too late on this one...  Everyone knows that 10^3 ~ 2^10, so there's no problem, right? RIGHT???

(AMPS' english translation uses IEC binary prefixes, though :) )

Of cause I did. And when I read it, I was really surprized. They said, that it has been since 1998, but as someone that works in telecom, I naver heard about. No customer told me "hey, you marking your devices wrong - it should be GiB instead of GB"

Maybe not, but the situation is a DAMN good deal for storage device manufacturers, who can conveniently "lose" a few GiB off a device because of the difference in 2^30 bytes (GiB) and 10^9 bytes (GB).  Conveniently, most OSes don't differentiate so that nice 200GB drive you bought will probably only hold 186 GB (really GiB, but herein is the problem :P )

I don't care which units we use. Well, Ok, I do, base 2 all the way baby! But as long as we are consistant in what units we use it doesn't matter all that much.
