Well, talking about your problems to get amule running: amule on Mac isn't very different from amule on linux or win32. It looks a little different, some files are saved at other places, but it mainly is the same app.
And I think you already got it up & running. The point is (and that's why I pointed you to the "amule is slow" document) that amule and the whole ed2k network
is slow. It's something completely different from bittorrent or even http / ftp downloads. The BIG advantage of ed2k is, as you already found out, the big ammount of files that you can get if you are patient

One note: Even if you have a LowID (which was your only problem as far as I can see) you are still able to download. You will have problems getting on some servers and you will loose some sources, but it will still work, only a little slower than with a HighID. So you can just leave amule running and try to figure out how to forward the ports in your router to your Mac. And don't forget: amule is slow, if you use it for the first time and only have a few files in your download it can take hours until it even starts downloading...
