Proxy help needed
« on: October 20, 2005, 05:46:14 PM »

In Thailand.....my isp blocks ports for amule/edonkey etc.......they do recommend a proxy, which is odd.....however when i put the proxy into amule, i get disconnected from all servers, or if i start up Amule with the proxy 'on' i cant connect to any servers, i just get dropped....

The proxy is on port 8080 and http 1.1

Without a proxy i cant transfer files d/l wise....i get a few bytes now and then if im lucky....my u/l speed is fine however....just no download happening.

osx 10.3.9.....latest build of amule....

So my question is, how do i successfully use a proxy with amule....anyone have any examples of proxies they use successfully please? Otherwise my p2p days are over and they had only just begun! It was working before on their very expensive pay as you go adsl, now im on unlimited i cant use amule for d/ling....

Any help much appreciated!

Are they blocking all ports?  If not, you could just change the ports that aMule uses and don't bother with a proxy.

Otherwise, I'm afraid I don't have experience with using a proxy with aMule.

Is your ISP recommending that you run the proxy on your system and then route aMule through it, or that you route aMule through a third-party proxy outside their network?  I'm not sure the first makes sense, but it sounds like that's what you're trying to do.

I dont know how many ports they are blocking, just those associated with p2p i think.....could
you recommend a new port setting for Amule please? Using the standard 4665 at the moment, which often reports as being blocked by servers i connect to.

The proxy is supposedly external to the isp. I dont know much about proxy either! never really had cause to use one before, but now i do i dont know what to do.

Ever tried using a port starting at 65500 ?
This solved my problems with the default ports used by torrent cliens :D

OBX, there's nothing to recommend.  Normally, unless they have special privileges, programs can use any ports from 1024 to 65535.  Because aMule implicitly calculates one UDP port number by adding 3 to the value you specify for your TCP port, you are actually limited to the range 1024 to 65532.

Within that range, all ports are essentially the same.  So, just pick a number.  The only issue is whether or not your ISP is blocking them.  If using one value doesn't seem to work, try another.

Thanks for the replies....ive given up using amule now....i tried a variety of port numbers and on my new adsl connection is simply doesnt work, as mentioned before, when i was using my isps pay as you go adsl it worked fine, now it wont d/l....u/ling goes along nicely, but there is simply no d/l....or if there is it is in the 0.1-5k sec bracket and thats not something worth using.

I tried ports upto 60,000 plus, but still nothing, i often get the message my port (whatever it is at the time) is not reachable, i keep getting a low ID and being banned as a result. No d/ls either....so not having a lot of fun. I can connect to servers, in fact everyting is as it should be, but no d/ls...

What is bizarre however is that i am now using edonkey....buggy as hell, but it works...d/ls fine...port is reachable generally....altho i still get banned a lot....odd and disappointing as i much prefer amule.

Thanks all anyway. If someone comes up with a better solution please let me know.
