hello my name is ori
i would really want to start using amule.
i have an osx 10.3.9
i downloaded a several versions and i cant open the aplication. the mule icon is on the desktop
and would do nothing when double clicking it.
when i look at the dock it looks like it starts to work but then fading away.
please help

Hi siloosh. Don't panik, we'll figure out what the problem is.

To get a better idea what is going on, let's run aMule through the command line, so we get more feedback:

First, download the official 2.0.3 release for the Mac (see here), unzip it and put it in your Applications folder.
Then we need a Terminal window, so open Applications -> Utilities -> Terminal.
Now, drag the aMule application icon from the Applications folder and drop it onto the terminal window. Terminal will paste the path to the application onto the command line for you. It will also add a space after the path.
Delete the space at the end of the path.
Add "/Contents/MacOS/amule" to the end of the path and press return.
aMule should now start and generate some output in the Terminal window.
Once aMule has crashed, copy the last 4 or 5 lines of this output and post it here on the forum. This will gives us a much clearer idea at which point aMule fails on your machine.

Wait, didn't you say aMule does not start up? I would be very surprised if you could start aMule only through the terminal but not via a double-click in the Finder. But anyway, I guess, most importantly aMule is running now on your machine.

This is now the time where normally I would point you to the getting started guide in the wiki, but unfortunately the wiki is currently down for maintenance work. So you will have to play with aMule a bit to figure out how things work.
Concerning your "not conected to server" message, do you see the big "Connect" button in the top left corner?

I keep forgetting if aMule creates a server list when none is there or if you have to download the servers yourself. If the server list is empty click on the small "Play"-like button to retrieve some servers.

hi again and thanks again for the constintency (can you say that in english??)
well there is some more problems ?( : (i will copy and paste all what the comp. writes so this one is going to be long)

- i can open the app. only through the terminal otherwise it will react the same as befor.
- after the app. opens it wount connect cause there is no server. when i press the "little play button" the app.
unexpectadly quit.

aMule CVS is pretty unstable under 10.3.9 these days. I'm working franticly on locating the reason for these instabilities but it might take another week or so for this to be fixed. In the meantime, I recommend that you use the official 2.0.3 build (you can get that through the download button on top of every page here).

To keep your current settings you need to do the following:

Note: When you start any of the above two versions for the first time, the invisible ".aMule" settings folder in your home folder will be moved to "Library/Application Support/aMule" in your home folder. If you want to go back to an older version of aMule (e.g. 2.0.3) then you need to move the folder back if you want to keep your settings and partial downloads. To do this, quit aMule and do "mv ~/Library/Application\ Support/aMule ~/.aMule" in the Terminal before you start the older aMule version.
Also, if your Incoming or Temp directories refer to folders within the configuration directory (which they do, by default), then they will have been changed by the relocation. In other words, if your Incoming used to be "/Users/[yourusername]/.aMule/Incoming", the relocation changes it to "/Users/[yourusername]/Library/Application Support/aMule/Incoming". So if you decide to switch back, you need to also change those directory settings to refer back to their old locations (you can do this in "aMule Preferences -> Directories").

well after i install the 2.0.3 version and do the "terminal thing" and then when i try to
find servers with that little play button the app. just quit.

My guess is the url does not work anymore and only more recent versions of amule have proper error handling for this situation.

Here is what you want to do to get a nice and clean serverlist:

Quit aMule if it is still running.
Download http://www.gruk.org/server.met.gz. You will get a "server.met" file on your Desktop.
In the Finder do "Go->Go to Folder" or alternatively hit . In the resulting dialog enter "~/.aMule" and hit return. This will open a Finder window with the invisible ".aMule" folder.
Now drag the new server.met file from your Desktop into this folder. You will get asked if you want to overwrite the old file in the folder, so click 'Replace' in the dialog that pops up after the drag.
Start aMule and you should have a decent server list. :)

well.. thanks again.
the servers are working, i even down loaded a file but only through the terminal.
whenever i try to open the app. the simple way the icon just fades away and the app. wount work.
another question - it seems a bit slow (between 0.1 to 4.6 KB's or so), and most (maybe 97 % ) of the downloads are "waiting" - is it suppose to like that?

I'm not sure why you can start aMule via Terminal but not via double-click. Maybe Ken has some idea.
Personally, I always run amule via the command line because it gives you more detailed feedback.

Concerning download rates, the ed2k network is really all about patience. It usually takes a few hours for downloads to really get started. That's why ideally, you want to keep running aMule 24/7.

siloosh, start up Applications -> Utilities -> Console to view your console.log. In the Edit menu, choose Select All. Now, double-click aMule's icon in the Finder. Stuff will be added to the end of the console.log. You'll be able to tell what is new because it won't be part of the previous selection. Copy the new stuff and post it here.

well, when i try to start the app. nothing added to the console, even whith other apps. (itunes or safari), i did it right after a restart. but i saw that there is a library logs >crash reporter>amule.crash.log - this is what is written for the last crash log:
